TMD/TMJ Treatment

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint—the ball and socket joint connecting the lower jaw to the skull. Discomfort around these joints is referred to as a TMJ disorder, or TMD. TMDs can be extremely difficult to live with. Patients with TMDs experience jaw pain and chronic headaches that can make day to day life hard. Due to bruxism, or other issues, your jaw joints can become overused and a TMD can develop over time. You can help prevent a TMJ disorder by avoiding grinding your teeth, cradling the phone between your jaw and your shoulder, and other situations that might cause too much stress on these joints.

Mouth Guards and TMD Treatment

TMDs are often caused by bruxism, or grinding. Patients can control whether they grind their teeth during the day, but some patients also grind their teeth during the night while they are sleeping. Teeth grinding can cause TMDs as well as other serious dental issues, but at Rochester Hills Dental, we can treat and prevent teeth grinding damage with mouth guards, or mouth appliances.
