WHAT ARE WISDOM TEETH?

Wisdom teeth are the third molars which develop in each quadrant of the mouth behind the other molars.  Wisdom teeth normally erupt between the ages of 17 and 25 years of age.  Dr. Ohlsson will assess if your wisdom teeth need to be extracted or remain in the mouth.

WHAT IS AN IMPACTED TOOTH?

An impacted tooth is a tooth is a tooth that fails to fully erupt through the gum line into the mouth.  Impaction occurs usually when there is not enough room for the tooth in the mouth.  An impacted tooth carries the risk of infection, inflammation, and damage to the adjacent teeth.

WHY SHOULD WISDOM TEETH BE REMOVED?

The most common reason that wisdom teeth are removed is the mouth is too small to accommodate the tooth in a fully functional position.  In addition, impacted wisdom teeth should be removed to prevent infection, inflammation, and damage to neighboring teeth.

WHEN SHOULD YOU KEEP YOUR WISDOM TEETH?

You should keep your wisdom teeth when there is enough room for it to erupt fully in a proper position and it is functional.  In addition, they should only be kept as long as you are able to reach them with a toothbrush to maintain proper dental care.
