Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in many foods and water.
Your teeth can go through two processes:
Demineralization – minerals lost from a tooth’s enamel layer when acids attack the enamel. The acids are formed by plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth.
Remineralization – minerals such as fluoride. calcium, and phosphate are redeposited on the teeth which strengthens the enamel.
Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth.
Fluoride is very important for children up to age 16 to be exposed to especially with the development of primary and permanent teeth coming in.
Fluoride is also very beneficial for adults to aid in the remineralization process which helps to prevent decay.
We at Rochester Hills Dental offer fluoride for patients of all ages. Fluoride is covered by most insurances for children. We are also offering a summer special on fluoride for adults. Please ask today for more details.
